Understanding Transaction Data
Inflows vs Outflows
Statements separates money in and money out:
- Inflow: Salary, refunds, transfers in, interest earned
- Outflow: Purchases, bills, transfers out, fees
Particulars
The particulars field contains the original transaction description from your bank. This typically includes:
- Merchant name
- Reference numbers
- Transaction type codes
- Location information
Fingerprinting
Each transaction has a unique fingerprint based on:
- Date
- Amount (inflow/outflow)
- Particulars
This prevents duplicate imports when you upload overlapping statements.
Tips for Effective Management
Regular Categorization
- Review uncategorized transactions weekly
- Create rules for recurring patterns (see Categorization Rules)
Use Entities
- Entities help track spending by vendor/source
- More specific than categories ("Amazon" vs "Shopping")
Add Comments
- Use comments for receipts, project codes, or notes
- Comments are searchable
Leverage Filters
- Save time by filtering to specific accounts or date ranges
- Focus on uncategorized items that need attention
Exporting Data
To export your transactions:
- Apply desired filters (optional)
- Click Export in the toolbar
- Choose format (CSV)
- Download the file
Exported files include all visible columns and respect your current filters.
