Interpreting Data

Understanding Cash Flow

Positive net cash flow: You're earning more than spending Negative net cash flow: You're spending more than earning

Look at trends rather than single months for meaningful insights.

Category Analysis

Focus on controllable categories:

  • Food & Dining: Often has room for optimization
  • Subscriptions: Review for unused services
  • Shopping: Track against budget

Don't worry about fixed categories:

  • Rent/EMI: Usually fixed
  • Utilities: Relatively stable
  • Insurance: Planned expense

Entity Insights

Entities show vendor-level spending:

  • Identify top vendors
  • Spot unexpected recurring charges
  • Track vendor price changes over time

Tips for Better Reports

Categorize Consistently

Reports are only as good as your data:

  • Review uncategorized transactions regularly
  • Use rules for automatic categorization
  • Keep category names consistent

Use Meaningful Categories

Choose categories that help decision-making:

  • Good: "Dining Out", "Groceries", "Subscriptions"
  • Less useful: "Misc", "Other", "Random"

Regular Review Cadence

Establish a review habit:

  • Weekly: Check uncategorized transactions
  • Monthly: Review category breakdown
  • Quarterly: Analyze trends and adjust budgets

Compare Periods

Use date ranges strategically:

  • This month vs last month
  • This quarter vs same quarter last year
  • Holiday months vs regular months

Limitations

Data Completeness

Reports reflect only imported data:

  • Upload all relevant statements
  • Include all accounts for complete picture
  • Check for missing date ranges

Category Accuracy

Reports depend on categorization:

  • Uncategorized transactions won't appear in category reports
  • Miscategorized transactions skew results
  • Review and fix as needed
